NCA’s GNC Cup Cricket Tournament 2010-2011

Nepalese Cricket Association of Australia (NCAA) has joined the forces with Gurkha Nepalese Community, organising GNC Cricket Tournament to give a competitive edge to Nepalese Cricket Community.

The games are held at Lees Park, Canterbury in Sydney every Sunday from October 2010 –February 2011.

For this event, local businesses have also shown a great support, sponsoring individual teams.  As a series; this tournament comprises three different versions of the game including Super Sixes, Twenty 20 and One Dayers. 7 Teams from the various parts of Sydney are competing in this tournament. These 7 teams are also the bearer of their sponsor’s name, such as Myagdi United, Intouch Sagarmatha, Nepcoms Laligurans, Pacific College, Mirchi Lumbini, Group Colleges of Australia and Send Paisa Kuleswor.

GNC Super Sixes was a rapid fire round where each team was given 5 overs to bat.  Played as a league, the two teams with the highest run rate were the finalists. Thus, Nepcoms Laligurans competed against Mirchi Lumbini in the finals. Both teams played with true spirit of game and pride. Nepcoms Laligurans edged out to be the winner against Mirchi Lumbini winning GNC Super Cup competition. The awards were presented by Gurkha Nepalese President Dr. Narayan Pradhan in the presence of sponsors, players and massive roaring crowds.

In the highly successful T20 format, the 7 teams were divided into two major groups. The two teams with the highest points were declared finalists. Glamour of this event brought sparks to the players as they rose to the occasion. The contest witnessed individual talent, team unity and characters under pressure. However, love for the game and true sportsmanship was evident among all. Fiercely competed, several players showed their true talents. Nepcoms Laligurans’ Nabin Gurung’s 64 balls century against GCA is first in any Nepalese Tournament. Mirchi Lumbini’s Kiran took 6 wickets against Intouch Sagarmatha was memorable as well.

During the semi-final of T20, Myagdi United tied with Nepcoms Laligurans, creating an extraordinary situation and excitement in the series.  Both teams were allowed 1 over so called “Super Over”. Myagdi United got better off Nepcoms Laligurans to get to the finals. Captain Pradeep Panta of Myagdi United bowled the teams to victory without sparing any runs. Earlier in the game; Myagdi United’s Dipendra Thapa batted superbly, scoring at the rate of 16 runs per over for the last three overs to win the match. In the final of T20; Myagdi United took momentum thrashing Intouch Sagarmatha taking out GNC T20 Cup. GNC’s sports secretary Mr. Anil Thapa Magar distributed   Awards to the players on this occasion.

GNC Cup’s one day matches are in its progressive stage. Number of supporters and spectators are growing with each game as players continue their cavitating forms. With the arrival of summer, GNC Cup also has been in its sizzling stage. Well supported by various media including radio, internet and newspaper this series has massive followers.

NCA Australia’s President Mr Rajendra Shrestha has expressed his delight for the success of the event and believes that cricket loving Nepalese community has become stronger and united with it. He has also thanked players for playing in true spirit of the games.

Currently, GNC Cup organised by NCAA is in its one day mode, with fans encouraged to join the fun. The games are scheduled on every Sunday poised to finish in mid February 2011.Every game producing great talent on display, this one will be an inescapable series.
